Exclusive – Lambert should start ahead of Balotelli against Chelsea, says former Liverpool striker

first_imgEmile Heskey has called on Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to hand Rickie Lambert a chance for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.Mario Balotelli is expected to lead the line for the Reds at Anfield despite the difficult start to his career on Merseyside, but Heskey believes Lambert should be given the nod ahead of the Italian. The 32-year-old has been restricted to a bit-part role since joining from Southampton in the summer.Speaking on the Sports Bar, former Liverpool striker Heskey said: “I would try Rickie Lambert to see what he is capable of doing because he is champing at the bit and we all know he has got goals in him.“I am fan of Mario but at this moment in time it is not clicking for him. He probably needs just a bit of a rest to get that hunger back, that fight back, to go again.”Rodgers is expected to make a number of changes to his side for the meeting with Jose Mourinho’s men after resting a host of regular stars in midweek against Real Madrid.Steven Gerrard is among those in line to return to the starting line-up.The 34-year-old’s enduring value to the club has been questioned in recent weeks, but Heskey insists he is still vital to the Merseysiders.“The manager wants him to play more of a holding role and he has done that role pretty well,” he said.“I would start with Stevie. He is a dominant figure in there and with him on the pitch I think Liverpool are stronger.”last_img read more
