Mission teams up with Shawnee, Lenexa to offer trips for senior citizens

first_imgThe cities will be offering a trip to St. Louis in early fall.By Dawn BormannMission City Councilors agreed on Wednesday to partner with the cities of Shawnee and Lenexa to offer more traveling opportunities for senior citizens. The agreement allows the three cities to pool resources and secure a motor coach for extended trips. As it stands, Mission rents a van from Mission Square Independent Senior Living for short trips. The city doesn’t have enough people to justify using a large bus for longer trips, said Parks and Recreation Director Christy Humerickhouse. The new plan guarantees Mission residents will have at least 15 spots on each trip. If one city doesn’t fill its maximum spots, another city can use its wait list. Each city will be responsible for registering its own residents, City Councilor Pat Quinn said at the meeting.Humerickhouse said the city has a large senior population that gathers regularly at the community center. Word has already spread about the new possibilities.“Since we’ve put the word out that we’re going to do it they are very excited,” she said.A lineup of trips has already been released.April 27: Baldwin City Dinner TrainMay 25: St. Joseph, MissouriJune 2: Warm Springs RanchAug. 17: Chicken N’Pickin’Sept. 13-14: St. Louis, MissouriOct. 5: Jamesport, MissouriOct. 20: Louisburglast_img read more
