AEK move to the top after rivals slip up

first_imgThere was no winner in the weekend’s big game between Apollon and Anorthosis as the two sides settled for a point each allowing AEK to move clear at the top by one point following their easy 4-1 over Aris. Apoel moved into second place for the first time this season, and with two games in hand, after the champions demolished Doxa 8-0 while Nea Salamina increased their chances of first division football next year after defeating bottom side Ethnikos Achnas 3-0. In a scrappy and often hard-tackling game with few chances, Apollon and Anorthosis played out a 1-1 draw at the Tsirion, with the home side dominating play but managing to create few clear cut chances against Anorthosis’ well-marshalled defence. It was in fact the visitors who took the lead early on when their towering Brazilian defender, Douglão, rose unchallenged at the far post to head past Apollon goalkeeper Bruno Vale.Despite all their possession Apollon rarely troubled Anorthosis in the first half apart from a Zelaya header that went over the bar and a Jacolis strike that was beaten away by Anorthosis goalkeeper Ariel Harush.Apollon upped the tempo in the second half but it was Anorthosis who wasted a couple of chances to double the score through Abdullayev and Carlitos before Apollon’s Fotis Papoullis blasted the ball past Harush to equalise on the hour mark.Apollon pressed forward in search of the winner and went close twice – first Harush spectacularly stopped Maglica’s shot from close range and then, with minutes left on the clock, Anorthosis’ Daniel Pranic cleared Skembri’s goalbound effort off the line.AEK defeated relegation-threatened Aris 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick by the league’s top scorer Florian Taulemesse who found the net after a four-game barren run.Aris had taken the lead against the run of play in the 25th-minute through Frangou, but Taulemmese’s equaliser just before the break settled AEK’s nerves and a three-goal blitz in a 20-minute spell gave the Larnaca team a well-deserved win.Apoel are currently enjoying a purple patch hitting 20 goals in their last four league games.Against Doxa they scored eight and could have racked up double digits if it was not for some poor finishing by Apoel’s front men in the second half.Giorgos Efraim got a hat-trick while Igor de Camargo scored for the fourth consecutive game taking his goal tally up to 10.Nea Salamina’s recent winter additions, Carlao, Tiago and Eludu, were clearly behind their much-improved display against the hapless Ethnikos Achnas. Two first-half goals by Carlao gave Nea Salamina a deserved first-half lead with David Poljanec getting the third in the final stages of the game.AEL kept up their push for a European spot thanks to a last-minute own goal by Pafos FC’s Gulon in a game where both teams finished with 10 players.Omonia extended their winning run under Ivaylo Petev with their fourth consecutive win against Ermis Aradippou. Much improved Demetris Christophi grabbed a brace with Matt Derbyshire getting the third.Alki Oroklinis drew 1-1 with Olympiakos Nicosia on Monday night.CYPRUS FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS 2017-2018last_img read more
